Guan Yu (died 220) courtesy name Yunchang, was a general serving under the warlord Liu Bei in the late Eastern Han dynasty. He played a significant role in the civil war that led to the collapse of the Han dynasty and the establishment of the state of Shu – founded by Liu Bei – in the Three Kingdoms period.
Guan Yu is respected as an epitome of loyalty and righteousness. Fighting for his sworn brother Guan Yu lost at Fan Castle, cornered, surrounded by demoralized men and suffering from a poisonous arrow wound. To the end he was loyal to his sworn brothers and was executed next to his son Guan Ping.
The story of Guan Yu has been adapted into Chinese Buddism, Taoism and Confucianism and almost everywhere you look in China you will find little shrines of worship to the ancient warrior.
