Lord Fox drummed his fingers idly against the polished darkwood arm of the throne, his mind anywhere but the here and now. The supplicants were seemingly without end this day; nobles, merhchants, farriers, farmers, fools, and “friends”, everyone wanted something from him.
Not that this was entirely bad, being Lord Regent of New Grancia definitely had its perks. One of them was the ability to extort outrageous sums for certain favors to reputable, and sometimes, disreputable individuals. Of course, not every supplicant was a gold mine, he had to maintain appearances, after all, the appearance of the law must be upheld, especially when it is being broken. Thus, Lord Fox dutifully listened to the endless petty concerns of the citizenry this day, how he longed for some adventure again.
After having the keys to the kingdom handed to him on a silver platter, Lord Fox thought he had achieved everything he had ever dreamed. Wealth, power, prestige, respect, more wealth, all were his, yet something in him yearned for the thrill of exploring the vast wilderness in search of untold riches. This was most unsettling to the halfling. He could make more money in less time, and with far less personal risk here in this room than he could raiding a dozen dragon's hoards. So why did he want to do it anyway?
Lord Fox was contemplating this thought, when Kessath, the court wizard, strode in through the magnificent double doors with a look of excitement on his face. “My lord!” he called out as he sought leave to approach, which was granted with a gesture. Kessath hurried to the Regent's side and whispered in his ear, “I have discovered the secret of Morty Ransom's treasure map!”
With a gleam in his eye, Lord Fox smiled.
